come now —

surely you must remember the ways in which we spent our days —

as if they numbered in the millions —

as if we could keep going without fear of falling
behind the stories we tell each other
the poems we write for one another
the jokes we make in an effort to stall
an inevitable good-bye —

surely you haven’t forgotten the many afternoons we chose death over meaningful life, and swallowed bitter pill after bitter pill of truths that to this day we regret ever knowing —

how does one forget something so obtrusive, so offensive, so definite in its reality —
how does one ignore an omnipresence whose very remembrance demands forgottenness —

how indeed —

come, now, surely you remember how they say
we were going
nowhere — see
now here we are —

surely you have not forgotten —
